Overview

This site sets no cookies of its own, does not count visits and embeds no services from other providers. Fonts and images come from the same server as the site. Personal data only comes up when you open the site (delivery by the host) or write to me.

Hosting with Cloudflare

The site and the demo are delivered by Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA, “Cloudflare Pages” service). To get the site to your browser, Cloudflare processes on every request what your browser sends anyway: IP address, date and time, the requested address, the page you came from, and your browser and operating system. Cloudflare also uses this to detect and block attacks. Cloudflare only shows me totals, such as how many requests there were on a day, not individual IP addresses.

The legal basis is my legitimate interest in a secure site that loads quickly (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). Cloudflare processes the data on my behalf; the data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is part of Cloudflare’s terms. Cloudflare may also process data in the USA. Cloudflare, Inc. is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, covered by the European Commission’s adequacy decision of 10 July 2023. Cloudflare has also included the Commission’s standard contractual clauses in the agreement. How long Cloudflare keeps the data, and more, is in Cloudflare’s privacy policy: cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

If Cloudflare considers a request suspicious, it shows a short security check before the site. Only if you pass it does Cloudflare store the cookie “cf_clearance”, so the check does not come back on every click. This cookie is needed to deliver the site securely; no consent is required for it (§ 25 (2) no. 2 TDDDG).

Demo in the browser

The demo runs entirely in your browser. The laptop, TV and phone on the demo page only talk to each other inside your browser; nothing goes to me or anyone else. So that the demo picks up where you left off on your next visit, it keeps the following in your browser’s storage (localStorage and IndexedDB):

If you load a map image of your own in the demo, it stays in your browser; it is not uploaded. It only lasts while the tab is open: when you start the demo again later, it removes the image from storage.

A few details only last while the tab is open (sessionStorage), such as which window is the TV, which map image you loaded yourself and whether you have seen the note for phones. The demo sets no cookies.

“Start over” resets the state of Crowford; your language and other settings stay. To remove everything at once, delete this site’s data in your browser. Because these entries only serve to show you the demo the way you are using it, no consent is needed (§ 25 (2) no. 2 TDDDG).

Before the demo starts, the site checks whether your browser supports WebGL. The result is only shown on the page; it is neither stored nor sent.

If you write to me

If you send me an email, I process your address and your message to reply. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in answering questions (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR); if it concerns a contract with me, Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR. I delete the message once the matter is settled and there is no obligation to keep it.

Emails to contact@screencrawler.app are received by Cloudflare (“Email Routing” service, address above) and forwarded to my Gmail inbox (Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland). According to Cloudflare, it neither stores nor reads the message. Google may also process data in the USA; Google LLC is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

The ScreenCrawler program

ScreenCrawler runs on your laptop or PC and stores your campaigns, maps, heroes and settings there. There is no account, and the program does not send me any usage data. Your laptop or PC, the TV and the phones connect over your own Wi-Fi. What they exchange stays in your network. The program does not look for updates on its own.

ScreenCrawler only goes online when you set up the narrator’s voice: after you confirm, the program downloads Python packages from the Python Package Index and a speech model from Hugging Face. Both see your IP address. These connections go directly between your computer and the provider; I receive nothing from them.

ScreenCrawler takes a character sheet from D&D Beyond as a PDF that you download there yourself. The program reads the file on your computer and does not connect to D&D Beyond for it.

Your rights

You can ask for information about your data (Art. 15 GDPR), its correction (Art. 16), deletion (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18) and transfer (Art. 20). You can object to processing based on my legitimate interest (Art. 21). An email to me is enough.

You can also complain to a supervisory authority. The one responsible for me is the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information of Baden-Württemberg, Lautenschlagerstraße 20, 70173 Stuttgart, Germany.

There is no automated decision-making or profiling here.
